Tuesday 29th November
6.30pm - 8.00pm
Join us for this one off project on Traditional Voyaging and Navigation - learn about the waka revival, navigation without instruments and how to find south ... curious?
What will you learn?
We'll learn about what traditional voyaging and celestial navigation is, why it's important today and what is being done to ensure the knowledge is passed on. We'll also learn of practical applications for the basic foundations (like how to find south if you're lost, be it on land or sea). And most rewarding of all will be Jack himself sharing (with his immense enthusiasm) his incredible experiences, from stormy seas to the perpetual summer, and how he is working to share is learnings and knowledge for the future.
Who will be teaching?
Jack Thatcher is one of only 3 Master Navigators in New Zealand and a handful in the Pacific. He has been involved in the waka revival for almost 30 years and completed many voyages without navigation equipment, including in 2012-13 to Rapanui (Easter Island). He is now heavily involved in training the next generation of celestial navigators. We are honoured Jack has agreed to share his time and a small taste of his knowledge and experiences with us.
